Shannon McCall, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC-I, is director of coding and HIM at HCPro, Inc. where she manages the instructors of the Certified Coder Boot Camps® which cover physician and outpatient hospital coding and inpatient hospital facility coding. As a lead consultant for HCPro’s Revenue Cycle Institute, she works with hospitals, medical practices, and other healthcare providers on a wide range of coding-related issues with a particular focus on coding reviews and audits. McCall has extensive experience with coding for both physician and hospital services. Prior to joining HCPro, Inc., she worked for Per-Se Technologies, a national medical practice management company, where her duties included serving as instructor for Per-Se’s in-house coding training and certification program.
Kimberly Anderwood Hoy, JD, CPC, is the director of Medicare and compliance for HCPro, Inc. and is the lead instructor for HCPro’s Medicare Boot Camp® - Hospital Version. She is also a lead consultant for HCPro’s Revenue Cycle Institute. Hoy has served as a compliance officer and in-house legal counsel for hospitals and has developed and implemented corporate-wide compliance programs for two hospitals. As a hospital compliance officer, she regularly provided research and guidance on coding, billing and reimbursement issues for a wide-range of hospital services. She has a particular expertise in charge description master operation, development and maintenance. Hoy has experience conducting billing compliance audits and internal investigations and has had primary responsibility for HIPAA Privacy Regulation compliance, including risk assessment, program development, implementation of policies and procedures, and ongoing operations.
Jennifer Avery, CCS, CPC, CPC-H, has extensive experience with coding for both physician and hospital services. Prior to joining HCPro, Inc., she worked for Health Partners Investments, LLC. a medical practice management company, as a Lead Coder where her duties included coder training, auditing and coding for all new specialty physicians and served as back-up coder for all other coders during vacations and back-log. Avery was also a Coding Consultant for Coding by the Numbers where her duties included coding for in-patient services on an as needed basis. Avery holds both Associates in Health Claims Management and Medical Assisting from Davenport University, Granger, Indiana. Avery currently serves as President of her local chapter of the American Academy of Professional Coders in Oklahoma City.
Cindy Basham, MHA, RN, CPC, CCS, has extensive experience relating to coding and billing of both physician and hospital services. Prior to joining HCPro, Inc, she worked for a large California hospital system as a Compliance Auditor. Her duties included monitoring and performing audits for coding, compliance and documentation. She also worked extensively with reorganization of clinical departments. She has also previously worked as an independent consultant focusing on coding, documentation and compliance relating to hospital inpatient services with particular emphasis on intensive, cardiovascular and emergency room care. Her clinical experience as an RN includes intensive inpatient cardiovascular surgery and emergency room patient care.
Peggy S. Blue, MPH, CPC, oversaw the development, implementation, dissemination, and reporting of information related to Medicare professional services training efforts for Highmark Medicare Services prior to joining HCPro, Inc. In that capacity Blue has researched, resolved, and responded to issues and inquiries from the physician community in addition to congressional offices, medical societies, and professional associations. Blue has delivered multiple presentations on Medicare legislation. Blue is a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders. She holds a Master’s of Public Health from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a Bachelors of Art degree from Purdue University.
Shelia R. Gunn, CPC, CCS-P, CMBS-I, has extensive experience with coding for both physician and hospital services. She has worked in various capacities in which her duties included serving as an Instructor for Coding and Reimbursement training and certification programs. She has previously worked for the University of Virginia Healthcare System as the Assistant Director of Coding Services. Gunn holds an Associate of Science (Cum Laude) in Applied Behavioral Science from Essex County College in New Jersey.
Judith L. Kares, JD, spent a number of years in private law practice, representing hospitals and other health care clients, and then as in-house legal counsel prior to beginning her current legal/consulting practice. In that capacity, she served first as Assistant General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) and then as Deputy General Counsel, Regulatory and Contract Compliance, with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the National Capital Area (BCBSNCA) in Washington, D.C. In both in-house positions, Kares had primary responsibility for contracting and regulatory compliance. The latter included oversight of federal and state health care programs. BCBSAZ was a fiscal intermediary, a Medicare risk and AHCCCS (Arizona’s managed care alternative to traditional Medicaid) contractor, as well as a participating contractor under the national Blue Cross/Blue Shield Federal Employee Program. Kares is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Phoenix, where she teaches courses in business and health care law and ethics and is a frequent speaker at healthcare-related seminars. In addition to her membership in the State Bar of Arizona and the Tennessee Bar Association, Kares is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the Health Care Compliance Association, and the Arizona Association of Health Care Lawyers. Kares earned her Juris Doctor degree (with high distinction) from The University of Iowa, College of Law and her B.A. (with highest distinction) from Purdue University.
Debbie Mackaman, RHIA, CHCO, is an adjunct instructor for the Medicare Boot Camp - Hospital Version and is the Compliance Officer and Director of Health Information for a healthcare system. She has over 16 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including both PPS and CAH coding and reimbursement systems. She addresses a wide range of coding and billing issues for hospitals, physicians and home health and develops and manages compliance programs, with a focus on high risk areas, auditing, and charge master maintenance. Mackaman is an active participant with state and national committees and task forces on privacy, coding and payment policies, and education. Mackaman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Health Information Administration from Montana’s Carroll College. She is accredited as a Registered Health Information Administrator, as well as a Certified Healthcare Compliance Officer. She is a member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is the past president of the Montana Health Information Management Association.
Joe Rivet, CPC, CCS-P, CEMC, CICA, serves as an instructor for HCPro’s Certified Coder Boot Camp® - Original Version, which focuses on physician and outpatient hospital coding. He has extensive coding and auditing experience with both physician and facility coding. He is also a lead consultant for HCPro’s Revenue Cycle Institute. Rivet has written and contributed to several professional articles that have appeared in E-Perspectives, published by the Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors; Justcoding.com, published by HCPro, Inc,; Briefings on APCs, published by HCPro, Inc. He has also given numerous presentations on emergency department coding, coding and billing audits, and coding compliance.
Lisa Rae Roper, MHA, CPC, CCS-P, has 20 years of experience in business management, training, coding and healthcare consulting. Prior to joining HCPro, she operated an independent consulting firm where she completed projects in business, management and training with universities, state and local health departments, specialty physician offices, hospital outpatient facilities, and surgical centers. Additionally, she was the Coordinator of Allied Health and Safety for the Missoula County Public Schools Adult Education Division, where she developed and implemented training programs for Personal Care Attendants, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Medical Office Essentials. She also developed curricula for and served as the lead instructor for coding and billing courses. Before going into consulting, Roper was Business Office Manager for Mercy Integrated Health, an affiliate of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Arizona. This company provided coding, billing and software management for multi-specialty physicians, residents and faculty physicians, and multiple external clients. Roper holds a Master of Science degree in Health Administration from Kennedy-Western University, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and a Bachelor of Science in Management from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona.
Diana H. Williams, BS, CPC, CCS-P, CCP, has over 23 years experience in health care. With extensive experience in coding education, medical insurance and provider management realms, Williams has a complete understanding of the reimbursement process. Williams has experience in coding multiple specialties including general surgery, radiology, evaluation and management, transplants, occupational medicine, family practice, pediatric general surgery and pediatric urology. She is an experienced educator, auditor, coder, manager and medical insurance professional. She has worked in large insurance corporations, hospitals, large and small medical offices in various capacities and utilizes this diverse experience as an employer resource for coding and billing issues. She also has experience with all types of insurance plans and carriers including commercial, workers compensation, medicaid and medicare. Williams was certified by the State of Colorado as a career college billing and coding educator and has taught for several years. She has developed and conducted coding classes and compliance training for provider staff and medical providers. She also writes regular coding articles for JustCoding.com. Williams holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Georgia State University.
