Our office is overwhelmed with the amount of work from New Innovations, recruitment and ACGME projects. We have approximately 80 residents/fellows in our anesthesiology program.

How many residents and staff does your residency program have?

Several years ago, our Graduate Medical Education Office developed a pocket informational CD. The CD is relative inexpensive to produce and contains information on all of our residency and fellowship programs, a sample contract, salary/benefits information and employement requirements. The CD is distributed to all programs and given to all applicants who interview. In return, applicants are asked to sign a document acknowledging receipt of this information.

I actually had an applicant's mother (GYN physician) call me asking if there was any way I could arrange an interview for her son (a preliminary PGY1 resident in another program). This was after I and my PD told her son that we had no open positions, and there was nothing we could do. After this unsuccessful phone call, the applicant AGAIN forwarded me all his ERAS documentation unsolicited. Needless to say, he's not being invited.

We provide information about benefits to our candidates during our power point presentation on interview day. We also provide the candidates with a copy of the contract.

Like Maria, I also include a blank contract in their information packet which details all the benefits of appointment, salary, etc. Afterall, you need good information to be able to make an informed decision about the next phase of your career.

We hand out a packet with information which includes a blank copy of the contract, a print outs from our GME office website with various policies and procedures and other information. Our residents do all their benefits online with 1 specific person at our GME office and her contact information is also provided so that they can send her specific questions that she can assist them with.

Only once...2nd year resident had just come back from maternity leave of her 2nd child, and her father (also a physician) called to ask if we could go easy on her with regards to call. He was truly concerned that she was exhausted and stressed, and asked that I not share his call with her. I respected his wishes, and never told her about it until she was graduating. She was very touched by her father's warmth, and said she was very glad that I had shared the story for she would never forget it.

I have a PowerPoint presentation that I present to them that outlines some key facts about our program. It goes over the health plan, premiums, dental, etc.; vacation/leaves of absence, disability, life insurance, worker's comp, etc.; a sample contract, and a compensation/benefits estimate for the total package.

I love the idea about the Newsletter. Even though we minute our Faculty Meeting and send to all faculty, a different approach of relaying basically the same information may open so eyes and make everyone more aware. Honestly, not really sure how many of my faculty actually read the minutes. In addtion, a newletter would be a great thing to send to the "higher ups" of the institution. I am quite sure alot of times they really don't realize what is going on.

If anyone does a newsletter, it would be great to post for an example.
