Innovative recruitment strategy eases financial burden on residents

By: Julie McCoy September 9th, 2009 Email Print

Kaiser Permanente (KP) is offering a virtual recruitment session for medical students interested in applying to their residency programs this Saturday, Sept. 12.

A KP press release states that the online open house is the organization’s response to the increasing financial burdens medical students face (student loans, weak economy). Instead of flying out to visit the program, applicants can speak with program directors and current residents via the Web.

If you’re interested in learning more about this event, log on and see for yourself how it runs. The open house lasts from 10:30am-12pm PST on Saturday. Simply log onto http://www.videonewswire.com/event.asp?id=61401

Fellowship Forum: From Match to orientation

By: Sally Miller June 17th, 2009 Email Print

According to the NRMP General Schedule of Dates, it looks like fellowship programs Match at all different times of the year:

  • Allergy & immunology in May
  • Internal medicine and radiology in June
  • OB/GYN and anesthesiology in October
  • Ophthalmology in December
  • Pediatric and surgery fellowships in any month you can name

So what happens during all the time between Match Day and when the new fellows actually arrive for orientation?

We used to keep in vague touch with the incoming fellows, but these folks kept contacting us to be sure they were expected. And we’d wonder if they were still coming. Although the NRMP makes matching a legal issue, it’s still a “long time – no see” situation.

To settle our nerves about this communication gap, we now send a letter of confirmation” immediately following the Match Day. Here’s what’s in it:

  • A personal welcome for the fellow, to the institution, department, and program.
  • The official training dates expected for the coming year.
  • The date they must arrive for GME orientation, if earlier than the department orientation.
  • The post graduate year (PGY) they will be upon entering.
  • Notice of when they can expect to receive the GMEC Contract or Agreement of Appointment, which will include proposed salary, perks, credentialing process, and other information.
  • Contact information for the program director and coordinator.
  • Signature of the program director.
  • Request that they sign the letter and return a copy to you.

This form of correspondence provides an extra secure feeling, so we coordinators can breathe easier until the next July first, and the beginning of the new academic year.

p.s. Good luck with your Match this year, whenever it is!

How do you keep in touch with your fellows and avoid the long-time-no-see problem? Leave a comment in the box below.

A look at who didn’t Match

By: Julie McCoy April 1st, 2009 Email Print

There’s been so much talk over who did Match, that now it’s time to look at who did Match.

Check out the following stats reported in the AMA’s GME e-letter:

  • 1,087 unfilled PGY1 positions were up for grabs in the Scramble
  • More than 8,000 candidates did not Match and vied for those positions

Of those more than 8,000 candidates:

  • 1,072 were seniors of US allopathic medical schools
  • 677 were previous graduates of allopathic medical schools
  • 607 were students or graduates of osteopathic medical schools
  • 1,771 were U.S. citizen students/graduates of international medical schools
  • 4,372 were non- U.S. citizen students/graduates of international medical school

Read the GMe e-letter for information about how many positions in your specialty were available and filled.

Looking ahead to the 2010 NRMP Match

By: Julie McCoy February 26th, 2009 Email Print

As residency program directors and coordinators submit their Match rank lists this week, the last thing you probably want to do is start thinking about next year’s recruitment season. However, now is the best time to sit down and regroup while the experiences are still fresh in your mind. Ask yourself the following:

  • What went smoothly on interview day and during selection meetings?
  • What were the hang ups or inefficiencies during interview day and selection meetings?
  • What feedback did interviewing faculty and residents, and candidates give you regarding the program and interview process?
  • After you receive the Match list, what can you do next year to ensure your program recruits the cream of the crop? Revamp selection criteria?

Take a look at theĀ  NRMP Program Director Survey results, published in December 2008. The survey polls program directors of all specialties on what factors they use when deciding which candidates to interview. Data is reported for all programs as well as broken out by clinical specialty. It gives you a clue what other programs emphasize and consider when interviewing applicants.

What plans do you have for reviewing your recruitment and selection processes? Who leads the charge-program coordinator, director, or someone else?

Proposed changes to the Scramble

By: Julie McCoy February 9th, 2009 Email Print

A few weeks ago, I blogged about how the NRMP has formed a working group to redesign how the Scramble works.

The group has been busy and recently released this report outlining proposed changes to the Scramble.

The document outlines further considerations the committee must take into account before approving a new Scramble process. The NRMP asks residency program managers to submit their comments and concerns before March 1.

The Match: Residency’s pro-sports draft

By: Michael Pistoria, DO, FACP February 5th, 2009 Email Print

Well, it is that wonderful time of the year when we sit down, scratch our heads, and try to come up with our match lists. I’m a big sports fan, and for me, the process is somewhat akin to a pro-sports draft. You’ve got candidates moving up and down your draft board all season long. You’ve had the opportunity to scout some of them directly while they rotated on your teaching services. Others, you may have only had a single interview to try and capture as much information as you can.
