ACGME gives guidance on managing emergency situations

Today, the ACGME posted Responsibilities of ACGME-accredited Programs and Institutions in Local Extreme Emergent Situations, which discusses protocols for handling emergency situations.

The ACGME makes the point that “extreme emergent situation” differ from “disasters” as defined in the ACGME Policies and Procedures. The accreditor states that emergent situations are affect only one sponsoring institution, participating institution, or clinical setting.  Epidemics are listed as an example of an emergent situation. According to the ACGME, a disaster affects an entire community or region for an extended length of time. The ACGME Policies and Procedures list Hurricane Katrina as an example of a disaster.

In the event of an emergent situation, the organization says that DIOs should immediately report to the ACGME’s Executive Director of the Institutional Review Committee instances where resident training, education, or clinical setting are disrupted.

The ACGME gives further instruction for reporting and resuming resident education in their FAQ.
