Training modules for computer systems prepare residents for patient care
Congratulations to Anne O’Hearn C-TAGME from Albert Einstein Medical Center, in Philadelphia, PA. She won free registration to the 4th Annual Residency Program Management Workshop!
The following describes how e-learning modules have shortened her resident orientation and better prepares trainees for their first day of patient care duties.
For the past two academic years, our hospital has started our new residents’ training on the electronic databases and systems in May. Prior to that, we had them training during the week of orientation, which meant that on their first day of caring for patients, a significant percentage of them were less than prepared to use the medical order system, the medical charts completion system, and the hospital e-mail system, to name a few.
This was obviously not an ideal situation, so GME teamed up with our IT department to develop online learning modules that taught residents how to use our most common systems, including those for patient admissions, patient charts and dictation, online radiology system for viewing x-rays, and safety protocols.
The Information System department now assigns new residents their e-mail accounts and network access by the beginning of May, and sends them instructions on how to access and complete the training modules for the different computer systems.
Reports indicating which residents have completed the modules are sent the GME office and all the program coordinators. Incoming residents must finish the online modules by June 15 so that they can receive their access permissions during the orientation week at the end of June, and become familiar with the systems they will be using from day 1.
This year we also were able to get certified online training for ACLS, which meant residents could do course work online, be certified, and then only attend a half day of hands-on training, instead of the two days of training it used to take.
Having these training modules and certification systems available for our new residents has already paid off the time invested in setting it up and making sure it worked smoothly. I know my interns have really appreciated being ready to start knowing just how to use the computers to get what they need to care for their patients.

My residents rotate through 4 different hospitals that have 3 different record systems. For the most complicated one (VA system) the incoming residents had access to an online course beginning this year. It has made a difference.
I wanted to ask about the certified ACLS online course – I am VERY interested in finding out more about this.
As always, thanks for all the great information that this forum provides.
Can you provide more information about the online ACLS course?
