Resident sues, claiming he was fired over his answers on the ACGME Resident Survey

A surgical resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital filed a lawsuit earlier this week against the institution saying that he was fired after he refused to lie on the ACGME Resident Survey, according to an article in The Frederick News-Post. (You must scroll down to see the story)

The trainee says program leaders told residents how they should answer the questions on the survey. When he gave his own answers, he was fired. Additionally, the resident claims that he was wrongly accused of writing a letter to the ACGME.

He is seeking millions of dollars, according to the article. A spokesman from Johns Hopkins University says that the resident was treated appropriately and that the program was reaccredited, the article goes on to say.

Preparing for visiting residents

A close friend of mine has spent the last two months traveling the country doing visiting rotations, trying to find the fellowship program of his dreams. He’s been everywhere from Florida to Virginia and even Massachusetts.

With all of the money he’s spending on traveling, imagine his disappointment when he received a phone call informing him that he could no longer come in 20 minutes before he was supposed to arrive. Apparently, there was some mix-up with paperwork and he wouldn’t be able to spend any time with the program.

Obviously, these visiting trainees are just a blip on your radar screen and a bit of a pain to deal with (just one more item to add to your to-do list). But, it’s important to remember that their visits are also part of recruiting them, so making a good first impression is important.

Program director evaluations

The August issue of Residency Program Alert, included an article that highlighted how three different institutions conduct program director evaluations.

With the information gleaned from these evaluations, program directors will:

  • Understand the expectations of their role
  • Identify areas for personal grown
  • Improve weak areas of the program before a site visit
  • Compare their performance against a benchmark or their peers

Most program director evaluation processes include evaluations from residents, colleagues, and a self-evaluation. Linda Youmans, manager of education services at Grand Rapids Education and Research Center was kind enough to share the document they distribute to program directors as a self-evaluation. You can ask a faculty members to evaluate the program director’s performance using this same form, but add a ‘Not Applicable’ category to answer options in case the faculty member did not work with the program director in that capacity.

August to-do list for coordinators

Here are a few items to add to your to-do list for August:

  • Continue helping new residents get adjusted to the program
  • Install ERAS software on PCs of all staff who will be using it
  • Process requests for information about the program and send out any recruitment materials
  • Consider organizing an event for local medical school seniors interested in your specialty
  • Complete GME Track and ACGME ADS updates for the new academic year
