We tried this a few years ago. We included them in many parts of our orientation. We had them tour the hospital so they would know where their spouse was spending many hours. We even had a separate follow up Spouse Orientation and invited "seasoned spouses" to share stories, ideas, babysitting numbers, etc. After the first meeting, everyone lost interest. We had planned on creating a Spouse Network designed for current and future spouses to share ideas. We spent a lot of time trying to coordinate meetings, etc... and no one took us up on it. So now, we just invite them to the Welcome Cocktail Reception with the Faculty and the Welcome Picnic, where they can bring the entire family. This seems to work, as they meet there and exchange numbers and form friendships. We try to continue to do family friendly events throughout the year and encourage residents to bring their spouses. I look forward to watching this forum for additional suggestions. Thanks, Deb (SUNY Upstate)
