Learn your new interns’ names and faces

Does everyone hand out a face sheet, or something similar, of their new interns or fellows each year? If not, it’s a very useful resource and service!

I use PowerPoint to create mine and print it on legal-sized paper. I have about 40 newbies starting each July,  and I can fit all of their pictures on one page. The pictures end up being pretty small-about 1.5″ squares. I include their names and their school names underneath.

I break them out by track, so all categoricals are grouped together, all prelims, etc.

Not only do I tack this to the board in front of my computer (so I can begin memorizing), but I also send the face sheet to current residents, attendings, nurse coordinators, and continuity clinic staff.

This really helps us begin to learn everyone’s names.

The only down side is that occasionally an intern has undergone a radical appearance change between when they took the picture and when they start, like hair goes blonde from brown, or a full beard comes off. . . not fair!

What tricks do you have for learning your new residents’ names? Better yet- how do you help attendings, etc learn all of their names and faces? Leave a comment in the box below.
