Handling the logistics of semi-annual evaluations
It’s that time of year when our program faculty members get together with residents to assess their performance thus far.
For me, this is where the rubber meets the road. How can I, as administrative staff, provide all of the pieces of the puzzle so that faculty can see the whole picture of where a resident stands? We are just getting up to speed using New Innovations, so I can’t tell advisers to log in and look at all of the information pertaining to residents yet.
Instead, I pull copies of everything I have on the residents, including rotation evaluations, 360 evaluations, procedure logs, self assessments, peer evaluations, etc. It all goes into a folder, along with a check list.
I schedule the appointments, which seems to help ensure both faculty and residents show up for their meeting. The evaluator reviews everything, checks for wellness issues, looks for evidence of progress, mentorship, and scholarship. After the meeting, the faculty member gives me the folder and checklist back to me.
At this point, it’s up to the program director to condense all of that feedback into a competency report card. He does this online so that we can track residents’ performance electronically.
We give residents access to the report card tool, so they know what they are responsible for, and what they will be evaluated on. Evaluation results are also available online for their viewing pleasure.
This is A LOT of work.
