Introducing Fellowship Forum
Editor’s note: Several fellowship coordinators and program directors have asked me about where they can get information specific to running a fellowship program. To meet the needs of the fellowship administrators in our audience, we’re introducing Fellowship Forum, a monthly blog post written by Sally T. Miller, fellowship coordinator.
Welcome to Fellowship Forum! This is a new monthly blog for fellowship administrators and coordinators who work with sub-specialties, be they within pediatrics, internal medicine, neurology, or other departments.
Major revisions to some specialty ACGME requirements
Just a heads up that the ACGME has opened several revisions to program requirments up for review and comment. Included are the following specialties:
In service training exams and board pass rates
I am assuming that most specialties have their own version of “practice boards” similar to the In Service Training Exam (ITE) taken by my PGY2 and PGY3 residents each fall. My residents’ ITE results have just crossed my desk, and the task of preparing appropriate follow up now falls to us.
Monday’s Poll: Looking ahead to orientation
Surgical fellow returned from first rotation in Iraq
Awhile back, Diane blogged about how to process residents and fellows heading off for an international rotation, but can you imagine one of your trainees going to Iraq?
A fellow from Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC) on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio recently returned from Iraq after spending six weeks training there.
Introducing guest blogger: Franklin Medio, PhD
Editor’s note: After hearing how much attendees of our 3rd Annual Residency Program Management Workshop enjoyed Franklin’s presentations, we had to bring him on board as a blogger for Residency Manager. I’m sure his blog posts will be just as informative and entertaining. Look out for his future monthly posts.
The semi-annual performance review: An opportunity for summative evaluation and self-assessment
It is the time of year for programs to conduct the semi-annual performance review of residents and fellows. This one-on-one meeting between the resident or fellow and the program director (or his/her designee) not only provides the time for a formal summative evaluation of the individual’s performance over the previous six months, but also offers a valuable opportunity for the trainee to develop his or her self-assessment (or self-evaluation) skills.
Starting the new year off on the right foot
I have had quite a day. We had snow last night, so I had to clear my car off this morning in icy rain, and I forgot my lunch. Once I got to work, someone plugged in a space heater and short circuited our entire row of cubes. Of course, I lost part of an article I was working on.
Thank you for speaker submissions
I just want to send a big thank you to all who applied to be speakers at our 4th Annual Residency Program Management Workshop in Atlanta. From the looks of your proposals, it’s going to be an awesome seminar.
Program coordinator succession planning
I’m on the verge of being coordinator-less. One of coordinators has taken a position in the GME office.
We have about 100 internal medicine residents, and I oversee all of the administrative functions of the department, including several coordinators. So, it’s up to me to make sure the baton gets passed from my old coordinator to the new one as smoothly as possible.
Monday’s Poll: Annual program evaluations
I’m working on an article for February’s RPA about how to develop an annual program evaluation form for residents to fill out. That got me curious about how programs distribute their surveys. Let me know!
