As debate over the Institute of Medicine’s report on resident work hours continues to swirl, ACGME CEO, Thomas Nasca, MD, expressed his views in an editorial published in USA Today.

In the article, Nasca says the ACGME must develop accreditation standards that further physician education, not hinder it.

He also says the ACGME will allow interested parties to comment on the IOM recommendations. However, he does not say when they will be open for comment. I checked theĀ  Review and Comment section of the ACGME Web site and did not see anything posted yet.

USA Today was not the only newspaper with an opinion piece on the IOM report. The New York Times also published an editorial article calling for Congress to put federal regulations covering duty hours into place. The article also says the IOM’s suggested five hours of protected sleep time may not be sufficient enough to reduce fatigue.
