Money saving strategies in a tough economy
You can’t turn on the TV or open a newspaper without seeing a story about the economic crisis. The current financial climate is taking a toll at my institution, and I have to assume it’s doing the same at other academic institutions across the country. Although GME budgets may be insulated slightly, the unavoidable truth is that on a departmental level, we will be asked to do more with less money.
Our department is doing some big things that should have a positive impact on our bottom line. For example, we’re increasing the depth and frequency of our documentation training for housestaff. Hopefully, this will help residents more accurately reflect the levels of care given and capture any missed billing opportunities.
We also are doing smaller things (things we probably should have been doing anyway) such as, double sided copying and contracting collectively for services to ensure better deals.
What novel money saving strategies are other programs trying?
