Monday’s Poll: How many candidates do you meet with each day?
Managing the program director-coordinator relationship
Recently, I e-mailed a few coordinators asking them what their biggest challenges are. I received valuable insights from everyone, but one coordinator’s response really surprised and saddened me.
This coordinator says her biggest challenge is dealing with a program director who is prone to angry outbursts and unprofessional behavior. His actions often leave her in an awkward position. With her permission, I am posting her e-mail below in hopes that you readers would have some words of advice for her. Here it is:
Lessons learned from an ACGME Site Visit
We just had our site visit last week. I am sure you can all relate to that relieved feeling that washes over you once it’s all over. I would like to share with you a “pearl of wisdom” I learned from this site visit.
Get to know the ‘rest’ of your residents
I completed my third sprint distance triathlon a few weeks ago. This one was more fun than usual because I recruited a cadre of residents to join me, including two former chiefs, a recent graduate, a current fellow, two current residents, and my sister-in-law, who is our Department’s COO. It was great to spend time with all of these individuals outside of work and get to know them a little better!
When things get chaotic, I have to sometimes remind myself to slow down and get to know my residents.
Politics and GME: Where are we going to end up after the presidential election?
A few weeks ago, I blogged about how important it is to read about and compare both presidential candidates’ health plans.
As the election draws closer, I’ve been doing more research on McCain’s and Obama’s positions and came across a few more interesting sources that are worth checking out.

Link between gender and confidence in medical students
It may be worth keeping a recent study from the 2008 issue Patient Education and Counseling in mind as you interview candidates for your program.
The study reports that although objective tests show male and female medical students perform equally well in the clinic, female medical students tend to feel less confident and more anxiety than their male counterparts. Issues related to competency seemed to exacerbate the female medical students’ feelings of inadequacy.
Preventing suicide and promoting wellness
Last year, one of our former residents committed suicide. Once the shock, sadness, and incomprehension subsided, I did a little research on physician suicide, and discovered that it was much more common than I thought.
An article in the September 2008 Annals of Internal Medicine says suicide rates among male physicians 40% higher than general population. Rates among female physicians are 130% higher than in the general population.
I believe now, more firmly than I did before this tragedy, that residency program coordinators can play an active and useful role in addressing this problem.
