Lessons learned from an ACGME Site Visit

We just had our site visit last week.  I am sure you can all relate to that relieved feeling that washes over you once it’s all over. I would like to share with you a “pearl of wisdom” I learned from this site visit.

In the Common PIF, in the section on Transferring Residents, there is a column on the far right that is titled, “Provided resident record to new program”. I had indicated on the PIF that residents transferred out in 2004 and in 2006, but that column was blank on the PIF.

Our site visitor asked me why it was blank. To be honest, I didn’t know why nothing was recorded in the column.

I called the ACGME, and they told me that this particular question was not added until 2007-2008–after the residents transfer out of the program. (Whew!)  I communicated this to my site visitor so that he could document why that column was blank on the PIF.

For those of you doing your PIF now, or if you want to go back into previous records, you might want to check this out.  The navigation trail to get to the specific question is:

Data Collection Systems

PIF Preparation
Common PIF
Resident Appointments
Transferring Residents…
(Choose the correct year and click on edit next to the transferring resident)
(Update/Verify Resident Information form shows on screen)
Step 4
Question 4b.  – Did you provide resident records to the new program?

Any one else have any little pearls of wisdom to share?

This is a great way of checking this information. Some would have panic and thought that was their mistake.

WOW!! thanks for sharing
