Integrating literature into your curriculum
Last week, The New York Times published a very interesting article I think is worth checking out.
The article, “Stories in the Service of Making a Better Doctor”, discusses how growing evidence shows that studying literature during residency can help trainees become more compassionate and aware of their patients’ needs and feelings. The article profiles programs that require residents to read novels, poems, and essays and discuss them. One program does this as part of the ACGME’s Innovation Project. This may be something worth considering for your own program!
Has anyone else out there tried an approach like this in their programs? What literary works have you had your residents read?
