Help residents and fellows find the time to vote

Heads up to all coordinators. . .

Election officials are predicting very long lines at the polls as a result of huge voter turn out this year. This can make it very difficult for residents and fellows to vote. Several states offer early voting. If your state offers this convenience, encourage residents to make it to the polls sometime in the next week so they don’t miss their chance to vote.

Because residents and fellows work long hours, your state may allow for them to qualify for an absentee ballot. Here, in Virginia, if your workday and commute total more than eleven hours, then you are eligible for an absentee ballot. Most trainees meet this requirement easily, and I imagine most states have similar accommodations. Check on your state election division’s Web site to see what the requirements are.

In Virginia, requesting an absentee ballet is pretty easy. All you have to do is go down to City Hall or the County Office building, complete an application, and submit it. You can even vote right there on the spot.

With only one week left until Election Day, remind your residents now to make arrangements to vote!
