A day in the life of a coordinator: Never a dull moment!

TGIF readers!

Here is a peek into a typical Friday for me– I think you can all relate to the craziness.

(All of these things really did happen to me last Friday.)

Two of my colleagues are out, and another is proctoring an exam. The day starts with an uninterrupted hour of reading and responding to e-mails, and it goes steadily downhill from here.

Next, I attend a meeting with our international electives director (scheduled for an hour) that lasts 105 minutes.  All good stuff, but I come away with a 10-item ‘to do’ list.  I excuse myself to go set up the laptop and projector for noon conference.

Of course, the laptop and projector are missing from our office. I spend the next 20 minutes trying to determine if someone borrowed the equipment or if  they really are missing. This involves text pages, a trip to the cafeteria another to the library. Turns out they are really missing (make a note to call the police). Conference is canceled.

On the way out of the room, I get sidelined by a resident who needs to make significant schedule changes due to personal issues. Lengthy discussion about accommodation and resources. I barely get back to my office in time for an emergency meeting about the implosion of one of our inpatient services.  On his way out of the meeting, the program director tells me he doesn’t like the Web site and wants significant changes made ASAP.

Going through the mail, an article catches my eye about new CMS regulations– have we addressed this? I make calls and send e-mails to billing and then schedule an in-service for the residents.

I’m ready to take a five-minute breather, but I get an urgent call from human resources. They cannot find copies of my staff evaluations, which need to be turned in today (of course).  This necessitates a hasty trip across four buildings to do some digging. In my hunt for the evaluations, I made the mistake of poking my head into the program director’s office. He wants MORE Web site changes.

As I eventually return to my desk, I discover that the phone guys have been in my office and have moved my phone down the hall where I’m supposed to be moving. . . next week.

It is 3:41pm, and I love this job!
