Bring your residents together no matter where they are
Our residents rotate through six hospitals during the course of a year. Because of duty hour compliance issues, not all of our residents can even make it to our weekly Grand Rounds presentations. As any of you in a similar situation know, it’s hard to get an idea of how your residents are feeling and doing when they’re not right under your nose everyday.
To ensure we’re in touch with our residents, my program director and I meet with each of the PGY groups twice a year. We are now in the midst of conducting these group meetings meetings. I think they are a great way to talk about how the rotations are progressing and address each group’s issues. It’s also a forum to discuss curriculum, policies, and procedures.
For those of you who have multiple rotation sites, what methods do you use for getting all the residents together during the year?

We don’t have the multiple sites problem, but getting everyone together in the same place only happens 2x a year and even that is challenging. We do have town hall meetings at least 1x per year with each group, and then again as needed. Usually a breakfast (complete w/hot food and linens)
