I am the supervisor of a patient access department that also includes ED triage. I am looking for information on collecting ED Copays.
Does anyone have helpful information or programs that they have put together? I would appreciate any feedback.
Thank you

Hi, Lori!
I work with a company called nTelagent. They recently published a white paper on best practices for account management in the ED; you may find some of the information useful. Here’s the PDF link:
“Critical Condition: Improving Patient Financial Account Management in the Emergency Department,” http://ntelagent.com/WhitePapers/nTelagent%20Emergency%20Department%20White%20Paper%202009.pdf
Good luck!

Thank You for responding. My hospital is very small and located in a rural area that serves quite a few medicaid and self pay patients. I have not been in this position very long, but would like to work on putting together a plan on how we can collect ED Copays. Just from the standpoint of logistics I have to get the ED Staff to “buy” into this program. That will be one of my biggest challenges I think. Most patients tend to be discharged and we do not see them again and we do not offer bedside registration. Any input would be helpful. Also, do you have centralized scheduling at your hospital?
Thank You

Hi Lori & All,
We have been doing copay collections in our ED for 4 years now. We started out like “gangbusters” and then things fell off a little and now we are back up to collecting an average of $25,000 – $30,000/month with a “soft” approach.
If I can provide any information to anyone, don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me.

What are hospitals doing to educate their communities that they will be collecing collecting in the ED? Has anyone placed notices in the local paper?
Thanks
