Vital stats: Hepatitis B protection for healthcare workers

By: July 5th, 2012 Email This Post Print This Post

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that healthcare workers “with reasonably anticipated risk for exposures to blood or infectious body fluids receive the complete Hepatitis B vaccine series and have their immunity documented through postvaccination testing.” OSHA Healthcare Advisor asked its readers what percentage of their workers met ACIP recommendations? Here are the results:

What percentage of staff with a reasonably anticipated risk for exposures to blood or infectious body fluids have received the hepatitis B vaccine series and had immunity documented through post-vaccination testing?

We currently test 100% of all staff that we actually give the Hepatitis B vaccination series to. We will check titer status if a new hire cannot produce all three vaccination dates. But as far as more seasoned staff, those receiving vaccinations 10-20 years ago, titers were never checked,as that was not the standard back then.

We titer all new employees for Heptitis B immunity. All current staff (i.e. all employees) have also been screened. We currently do not require Hep B Vaccination as a condition of employment, but this is being discusses as we still have high risk staff that have not been vaccinated.

We also do revaccination if titer negative and follow up with testing for HB disease if still negative after two full vaccination series.

I think it is so important to push protection for the healthcare workers. You will be able to give them good protection here. So glad that this is put in place here. Keep up the good work. financial counsel blog
