ICU CLABSI data available to consumers

The public now has access to how well a hospital’s ICU deals with central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI).

The Department of Health & Human Services is posting the information on the Hospital Compare web site, for the first time giving patients and prospective consumers the ability to compare infection prevention data on a quarterly basis, according to Consumer’s Union, February 1.

The initial CLABSI data covers the three-month January-March 2011 period when hospitals, under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, began participating in the pay-for-reporting program, says Consumer’s Union.

In 2013 surgical site infection data for abdominal hysterectomy and colon surgery, which hospitals are already collecting, will begin appearing on the Hospital Compare web site.
