Civil lawsuits against two San Diego hospitals for medical waste disposal violations have been settled, reports Waste & Recycling News, December 8.

In separate settlements, “Scripps Health Hospital agreed to pay $272,870 in civil penalties and costs while Sharp Memorial Hospital agreed to pay $102,939 in penalties and costs,” according to the report.

Investigations by the county Department of health at a city landfill and at both hospitals showed unlawful disposal, segregation, and transportation of medical waste.

In addition to the civil fines, Scripps will contribute $16,000 for inspection equipment at the landfill, and Sharp Memorial “will organize multiyear electronic waste collection and composting projects and will sponsor environmental educational programs,” according to Waste & Recycling News.
