Ask the expert: MSDS replacement frequency
Q: How often must we replace MSDSs in our MSDS file?
A: OSHA requires that employers have a current MSDS for hazardous substances in the workplace. An updated MSDS included with the product can get misplaced, so routinely request a new MSDS whenever your current one becomes three years old.
That’s not a requirement; it’s just practical advice.
If you do not have the current MSDS during an inspection, but you have an MSDS request to the manufacturer on file, this could mitigate an OSHA citation.
Use the MSDS Request Letter in the forms section of the OSHA Program Manual or on the Tools page to document your request.
