Three swipes and bacteria is out!

A study at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta in Canada found that swiping a plastic surface three times with a disinfectant wipe or saline tissue will eliminate 88% of most bacteria.

In the study, three different types of bacteria—Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Enterococci (VRE), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa—were spread onto sterile plastic Petri dishes that were left to dry, reports The University of Alberta.  Researchers then tested the bacteria samples with five different wipes varying the amount of swipes.

Results found that bacterial counts decreased the more often the plates were swiped, regardless of which wipe was used. The saline wipe that was used seemed to be as effective as a disinfectant wipe if the plates were swiped three times. But if the plates were swiped once, the saline wipes didn’t work as well as the disinfectant wipes.
