Lack of funding a problem for infection control programs

A study published in the April 2011 issue of the Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology journal found that lack of funding is an obstacle for healthcare organizations wishing to implement an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP).

Researchers distributed a survey to all members of the Infectious Diseases Society of America Emerging Infections Network (IDSA EIN) and received 522 responses. Seventy-three percent reported that their facilities have an ASP or are planning to create one, compared to only 50% in a similar survey done 10 years ago

The study found that 52% of respondents with an ASP reported that physicians working with infectious diseases did not receive payment for participating in the infection control programs, compared to 15% receiving payment 10 years ago.

The study concluded that lack of funding and workers remain an obstacle and hinder the implementation of more ASPs.

Most physicians partcipate in Infection prevention/control programs as a part of their contract, much like the physicians that participate in other hospital committee asignments so they are being paid for it, just not specifically for an infection control program. They wouldn’t be “paid” to participate in a Utilization Review Committee (or other hospital based committee) either.

Only deserving people win the struggle and get occupations. Those who are defeated suffer starvation and misery. In our country many persons are unemployed. Their number is very large. Unemployment problem is a great problem in our country.

Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
