As healthcare acquired pathogens (HAPs) become more frequent, the CDC is recommending all hospitals to create programs that highlight the cleanliness of near-patient surfaces and equipment at the discharge and transfer of a patient.
The CDC recognizes that monitoring cleanliness can be difficult. They have implemented two programs that hospitals can follow to properly monitor the effect of cleanliness: Level I program or Level II program.
The Level I program “will be an infection preventionist/hospital epidemiologist infection prevention and control (IPC) based program internally coordinated and maintained through environmental services management level participation,” according to the CDC. Upon implementing the Level I program, staff should know that it’s a team effort.
Also included in the Level I program are interventions to observe the quality of cleaning and disinfecting in the terminal room.
The Level II program is a similar program, though advanced, the CDC reported. After the environmental services department receives education in Level I, they will use their education to assess the terminal rooms’ thoroughness and cleanliness and then document it. Level II will also schedule monitoring of the thoroughness of cleaning three times a year.
Hospitals in Level I or in Level II should report any of its findings to the Infection Control Committee.
