NIOSH recently posted the Spanish version of “Safe Lifting and Movement of Nursing Home Residents” to it Web site.
The guide, originally published in English in 2006 , is for nursing home employers, administrators, nurse managers, safety officers, and healthcare workers interested in establishing a safe resident lifting program.
The publication includes sections on:
- The Challenge of Lifting Residents in Nursing Homes
- Benefits, Cost, and Effectiveness of a Safe Resident Lifting Program
- Frequently Asked Questions about Safe Lifting, Handling, and Movement Programs
“Research has shown that incorporating mechanical lifting devices into a safe resident lifting program decreases caregiver injuries, lost workdays, workers’ compensation costs, and employee turn-over while improving employee morale and the quality of care for residents,” according to the NIOSH document. Also, the investment for the equipment is quickly recovered thorough reduced injury costs to staff members, claims NIOSH.
