Yes, OSHA standards also apply to teens and summer work

With teens starting summer jobs right now, OSHA reminds employers that workplace hazards standards apply to this workforce too.

In fact, the Department of Labor recently published final regulations in the May 20 Federal Register updating protections for young employees in non-agricultural work, including definitions of what constitutes hazardous work that may be prohibited for workers under 18 years of age.

The OSHA Web page for businesses that employ teen workers provided tips on how employers can limit or prevent workplace injuries and links to other Department of Labor regulations applying to employing teenagers.

NIOSH estimates that 77,000 teen workers annually suffer injuries serious enough to require emergency room treatment.
