Reviewing exit route compliance

By: Terry Jo Gile October 8th, 2009 Email This Post Print This Post

OSHA Standard 1910.37 addresses the requirements for exit routes. Fines can be assessed if the exit route is obstructed with materials or equipment, or if an exit route includes a door that can be locked.

Exit routes must be free of highly flammable chemicals, have adequate lighting, and display signs that indicate the direction of travel to the nearest exit. Evacuation routes should be posted in a central and accessible location in the laboratory.

Normally, a lab must have at least two exit routes “to permit prompt evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an emergency” according to an OSHA fact sheet.
