Nursing facilities now under OSHA recordkeeping microscope

OSHA announced a new recordkeeping national emphasis program (NEP) to find employers who are underreporting injuries and illness in traditionally high hazard work settings.

NEP inspections will include “a records review, employee interviews, and a limited safety and health inspection of the workplace,” according to an OSHA news release, October 1. The program will continue until September 30, 2010.

Nursing care facilities are the only healthcare settings included in the scope of the NEP.

Last year, recordkeeping was the second most frequent OSHA violation among nursing and personal care facilities.

The OSHA Recordkeeping Handbook is a great source for everything you wanted to know about recordkeeping requirements, and it has lots of “what if” scenarios to explain what is work-related and recordable.
