Many of you have probably been following the gruesome story of Annie M. Le, the Yale graduate student whose body was found Sunday stuffed inside the wall of a lab building at the University.

Yesterday, New Haven police arrested Raymond Clark III, a lab technician and charged him with killing Le, the New York Times reported. Although no motive has been officially determined, authorities suspect it was a case of workplace violence.

“It is important to note that this is not about urban crime, university crime, domestic crime, but an issue of workplace violence, which is becoming a growing concern around the country,” New Haven Police Chief James Lewis told the Times.

“We have to really educate ourselves who we work with and how we deal with each other and those issues,” James added.

In another report from the Associated Press an anonymous law enforcement official described Clark as a “control freak,” who viewed the lab as his territory, which coincides with police suspicions.

This is a scary, but forceful reminder of how important it is to educate your staff members about workplace violence. Healthcare workers in particular face an increased risk of job-related violence.

Updated: ABC News reported that Clark texted or emailed Le to set up a meeting to discuss the condition she left her mice cages in. Another New York Times article investigates the high stress that accompanies being a lab technician. Some coworkers said they thought Clark was rude and went beyond the bounds of his position.
