Ask the expert: Review frequency for the exposure control plan
Q: How frequently must I review the bloodborne pathogens exposure control plan?
A: The minimum review requirement is once a year, but that is only if nothing has changed in your facility concerning bloodborne pathogens hazards.
Update the exposure control plan “whenever necessary to reflect new or modified tasks and procedures which affect occupational exposure and to reflect new or revised employee positions with occupational exposure,” states section (c)(1)(iv) of the bloodborne pathogens standard.
Failing to update the exposure control plan was the third most frequent bloodborne pathogen violation for physician practices last year. Average initial fines were $436 per violation, as reported in the upcoming September 2009 Medical Environment Update.
