Ask the expert: OSHA bloodborne pathogens standard and contract workers

By: David LaHoda August 12th, 2009 Email This Post Print This Post

Q: What is my facility’s responsibility for the safety of contract workers under the OSHA bloodborne pathogens standard?

A: OSHA says you share responsibility with the employer of the contract workers.

As the host employer you are responsible for site-specific hazards (e.g., providing appropriate personal protection equipment, ensuring the use of safety devices). The employer of the contract workers is responsible for basic training, pre-exposure vaccinations, and post-exposure follow-up, according to an OSHA FAQ. (Most frequently asked questions concerning the bloodborne pathogens standard.)

Make sure that the contract employees and employers understand this arrangement and document it, OSHA adds.
