Is there an OSHA regulation concerning employees bringing reading material (novels, textbooks) into the lab and then taking it out at the end of the shift?
There is no standard about bringing books, magazines, newspapers, textbooks, or any other kind of reading material into the lab.
However, I am hoping it is reading material for break time, which would be housed in a locker and only used at a non-biohazard site. As a general rule, personal reading material should not be brought into the lab and read during working hours when you have gloves on. This is another one of those situations that you should build into your lab safety plan and ensure that employees adhere to it.
If you do encounter a situation where an employee brings outside reading material into the lab, it must remain in the lab and would be considered subject to biohazards.
