Mind your manners when you cough

As the winter months approach you may have begun to notice a few familiar sounds.

Say, coughing and sneezing?

This makes it a perfect time to remind employees to prevent the spread of infections by coughing into their shirt sleeve rather than their hands. The best way to present training to employees is enforcing the idea that they are protecting themselves as well as the patient. The video Why Don’t We Do It in Our Sleeves? [1] is a great resource that offers a humorous refresher for staff members. The CDC also offers suggestions [2] for respiratory etiquette.

Encourage nurses and doctors to pass the information onto their patients. Placing signs at entrances, observing droplet precautions, utilizing masks, and encouraging those who are coughing or sneezing to stand at least three feet away from others in the waiting room will also help with awareness.
