Farmers markets becoming growing trend at hospitals

Fast food establishments have come to a halt at several hospitals in the U.S. Farmers markets, on the other hand, are in full bloom.

Kaiser Permanente, the biggest not-for-profit health system in the country, is offering 30 farmers markets at its organizations in Western states such as California, Washington, and Oregon. The markets, which take place in the hospital parking lots, allow patients, families, and employees to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables. [more]

Proposed 2010 fiscal year budget increases nursing incentives

President Barack Obama’s proposed healthcare workforce development funding for fiscal year 2010 could bring incentives to nurses in the field and in the classroom.

Of the $1 billion in the budget devoted to strengthening healthcare professions, $125 million is allocated to the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELPN)—an $88 million increase from the 2009 budget. The program contracts RNs with the federal government to work full-time in a healthcare facility with a nursing shortage in return for repayment of qualifying educational loans. [more]

Robots accelerate hospital’s med delivery process

Four robots are working overtime at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD, and their hard work is speeding up medication deliveries.

They don’t complain, get tired, or need a break no matter how many hours they work. The mobile TUG robots—dubbed Rigby, Herbie the love TUG, Jake, and Elwood—simply coast the facility’s hallways 24 hours a day, seven days a week, delivering medications to the nursing stations. Thanks to all their hard work, staff who previously delivered medication have been able to spend more time on patient care and less on pushing carts. [more]

‘Polling’ for collaborative practice

You want staff to deliver excellent patient care so in return, they achieve excellent patient outcomes. But you know how hard this can be if staff can’t, won’t, or don’t know how to work together effectively.

If you are looking to enhance collaborative practice at your facility, begin with a process that causes staff to take a step back and truly understand what collaborative practices are about. You can initiate this process by having medical staff, nursing staff, and other professional departments, such as respiratory therapy and pharmacy, participate in a survey that asks questions such as:

1. What does the term “collaborative practice” mean to you?
2. Do you feel that by improving collaborative efforts we improve patient care?
3. What are two things you can do to improve/enhance collaborative practice?
4. What are two things other professionals can do to enhance collaborative efforts?
5. Would you be interested in being part of a team that works with administration on a project targeted to improve collaborative practices in our organization?

You can also use the survey to begin to educate staff about collaboration by giving them a question that requires them to look at the literal definition of the term. For example:

Which of the following terms are synonyms for collaboration?
Joint, group effort, two-way, relationship, mutual, cooperation, shared, teamwork
This type of exercise reminds people that collaboration is more than co-signing standing orders or serving on the same committee.
