The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) 2009 Annual Meeting kicked off this morning in Chicago. Calling it “amazing” according to welcome speaker and course director Joseph Li, MD, FHM, the SHM meeting this year broke record numbers of registrants to the annual seminar—about 2,250 attendees—a landmark event in the hospital medicine specialty.

In 1997, SHM hosted its first of the annual conferences with a mere 110 attendees, according to Li. When the Beth Israel hospitalist director Li asked the grand ballroom for a show of hands of those who have been attending since its first show, only a handful of people raised their hands.

Today, the meeting, in the thousands, has evolved from a two-day program to a three-day program. SHM adjusted so with last minute changes, featuring a bonus tracks, including one that addresses the swine flu outbreak.

HospitalistLeadership.com is here to report live from the conference rooms and exhibit halls. Keep a lookout for more updates, analysis, and photos from the seminar!
