Question related to Skilled Rehab Therapy:

Can a therapist bill documentation time it they are in the therapist’s line of sight as treatment time and record those minutes on the MDS?

Can a therapist bill treatment time when transporting a patient from their room to and from the therapy gym and record those minutes on the MDS?

  2. Hi Hope,

Thanks for your question. Stefanie’s answers to your questions are below:

    1. Time spent supervising a resident who is performing a therapeutic exercise independently is not considered billable. Only the time spent by the therapist with the resident in direct one-on-one contact is billable.

    2. Time used to transport residents is not considered billable time. Only the time spent

“Medicare pays only for skilled, medically necessary services delivered by qualified individuals, including therapists or appropriately supervised therapy assistants. Supervising patients who are exercising independently is not a skilled service.”
