CMS now conducting on-site and off-site PBJ audits

CMS has released public use files (PUF) containing staffing data submitted by long-term care facilities for the first, second, and third quarters of calendar year 2017.

The PUFs can be accessed and downloaded here.

CMS has begun conducting on-site and off-site PBJ audits. Facilities are alerted that an audit will be conducted via a letter, and they are encouraged to comply to avoid receiving a negative icon on Nursing Home Compare (NHC).

During pilot audits conducted back in June, 2017, CMS announced that auditing would aim to determine if staffing is being reported accurately based on hours staff are paid to work. This examination may include, but is not limited to:

  • Information from payroll
  • Timekeeping systems
  • Invoices for contracted staff
  • Interviews with staff responsible for PBJ data entry

CMS plans to release risk adjusted measures on the average hours per resident day by nursing job categories this Spring, but an official date has not yet been determined. These measures will be incorporated into facilities’ Five-Star Ratings.
