The Summary of Advance Notice published back in April announcing potential options for revising certain aspects of the SNF PPS payment method places significant importance on clinical categories and resident characteristics documented within the MDS. This new model, RCS-1, would replace RUG-IV, if approved. This change is expected to happen by January 2019, pending public comment review, revisions, and official implementation.
“Now is the time to ensure coding accuracy and consistency among the entire interdisciplinary team for sections including C-Cognitive Patterns, G Functional Status, K- Nutritional Status, and I- Active Diagnoses,” says Renee Kinder, MS, CCC-SLP, RAC-CT, Director of Clinical Education at Encore Rehabilitation Services. “Considering the fact that these sections are often completed by nursing teams, providers will need to ensure their therapy departments can also demonstrate competency in understanding definitions and coding measures for these sections.”
