Under the MDS 3.0, if a patient is transferred or discharged to the hospital at 11 p.m., can we count the minutes and/or day?
Q: Under the MDS 2.0, if a patient is discharged to the hospital prior to midnight, we are able to count the “minutes” toward the MDS, but not the day. Under the MDS 3.0, if a patient is transferred or discharged to the hospital at 11 p.m., can we count the minutes and/or day?
Diane: According to the coding tips in the MDS 3.0 at item A2300 (ARD), if a resident dies or is discharged, then the ARD must be set (or reset) no later than the day of discharge. Assessment therefore can continue up to the moment of discharge and count toward the calculation of the RUG rate, even though the ‘day’ may not be billed. (See page A-23 of the MDS 3.0 RAI User’s Manual for more info.)
