Significant nursing home legislation on the floor at Capitol Hill

The first new legislation involving nursing homes since 1987 is being considered by Congress as both the House and Senate evaluate the changes and additions within the Nursing Home Transparency and Improvement Act. The bill proposes requirements for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and for SNFs, according to injuryboard.com.

Under the new legislation, nursing homes would be expected to include abuse prevention and dementia care in nurse aide training. SNFs would also be required to conduct more internal quality assurance, provide at least 60 days notice of voluntary closures, and reveal all owners, financers and operators.

CMS would be responsible for the collection and accurate reporting of hours provided by nursing homes and their turnover and retention rates, as well as revising Nursing Home Compare to include enforcement action reports.
