Ask Diane: Do I need permission to use the MDS 3.0 draft for training and screeing purposes?

Q: I would like our social service staff to begin using the mood interview questions from Section D of the MDS 3.0 draft when screening our residents. Do I need permission to use this form?

Diane: The MDS 3.0 draft is in the public domain, so you don’t need any special permission to use the form in the screening process or for in-servicing your staff. We commend you for beginning early!

However, all that being said, CMS has removed the MDS 3.0 draft from their website and doesn’t plan to put it back up until October 2009. There will be some changes to the form related to payment and although it’s unlikely that the interview components will change, it’s always a possibility.
