Updated MDS 3.0 timeline appears briefly on CMS Web site

By: April 10th, 2009 Email This Post Print This Post

CMS posted an updated MDS 3.0 timeline on its Web site Tuesday, but apparently removed the MDS 3.0 Web site and timeline Wednesday.

I contacted CMS Thursday about why the MDS 3.0 Web site was down and a CMS spokesperson told me the timeline was pulled because it is being revised. The spokesperson also said the MDS 3.0 was delayed until October 2010 “but the details are still being worked out” and the information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.  (MDSCentral originally posted the revised timeline on Tuesday– you can see how the story progressed by reading the Comments section below.)

To see a PDF of the updated MDS 3.0 timeline CMS posted briefly, look under the Planning Tools section on our Resources page.

According to the revised timeline, the next milestone for long-term care providers will occur this month or in May, when the SNF PPS proposed rule is expected to be published in the Federal Register. Nursing facilities should expect to receive more important information about the MDS 3.0 in October, when CMS says it will publish:

  • The final MDS 3.0 data specifications, including RUGs, RAP triggers, and Quality Measures/Quality Indicators (QM/QIs)
  • MDS 3.0 data elements, including admission, quarterly, swing bed, and discharge MDSes
  • The MDS 3.0 RAI User’s Manual

Readers,

On Wednesday afternoon, I noticed that CMS had apparently removed the updated MDS 3.0 timeline from its Web site. I posted a PDF of the timeline on our Resources page, so you can still see timeline. However, you may not be able to access the timeline posted Tuesday by clicking on the link to the CMS Web site.

Hi. The timeline was not removed–the whole webpage was removed, as were most internal links from other CMS webpages. No links “work.” CMS’s own search engine cannot find any MDS 3.0 information on its site.
So until CMS re-activates the page, am not sure we can be sure of anything, again…
