Ask Diane: Is all MDS 3.0 prep work on hold?
Q: Now that the MDS 3.0 has been has been delayed, should my facility put all prep work on hold?
Diane: Providers should look at this as a gift of time. However, the MDS 3.0 is still coming, it’s just been delayed.
We should have more information about the MDS 3.0 in October, when CMS plans to release the final specifications for the new assessment, as well as the RAI User’s Manual.
In the mean time, nursing facilities should use the extra time to analyze their existing processes and estimate how the MDS 3.0 will affect workload. You can start by measuring how much time your MDS coordinator and other involved staff members spend completing an assessment under the MDS 2.0. Then identify the areas expected to change under the MDS 3.0. Although the RAND Corporation final MDS 3.0 report estimates the 3.0 will take less time to complete than the MDS 2.0, your staff may initially have to adjust to some new requirements, such as interviewing residents for sections C, D, F, and J.
Examining how the MDS 3.0 will affect your facility’s processes now will help your facility be prepared to use the new assessment in October 2010.
