CMS to revise MDS 3.0 timeline; officials say implementation not delayed
CMS is revising its MDS 3.0 timeline, but officials said at a SNF/Long-Term Care Open Door Forum today CMS is still “working aggressively toward” an Oct. 1, 2009 implementation date for the new assessment system.
Many MDSCentral readers have noticed that CMS’ MDS 3.0 Timeline has been removed from its Web site. (If you click on the CMS MDS 3.0 Timeline link under our Resources page, you’ll get an error message.) At the open door forum, officials said there are “some inaccuracies” in the timeline and CMS will be revising it.
When asked whether providers could still expect to see a final MDS 3.0 form released in March, as the CMS MDS 3.0 timeline initially projected, Sheila Lambowitz, division director of CMS’ Chronic Care policy group, said “we’re evaluating the whole process and we’ll let you know as soon as we can.”
“Right now, we’re still moving forward and we want to make sure we cover all the bases and we address all the issues before we put a revised timeline back up there,” Lambowitz said.
MDS 3.0 Tip: Scheduling resident interviews
If you're thinking about managing your time under the MDS 3.0, consider that under the most recent draft of the MDS 3.0, several resident interviews must be completed within a three-day window based on the Assessment Reference Date (ARD).
According to the MDS 3.0 draft, four interviews must be completed the day before, the day after, or the day the ARD is set.
Make sure to schedule these interviews within the appropriate timeframe:
- The Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS) in Section C, Cognitive Patterns
- The PHQ-9 interview for Mood in Section D, Mood
- Preferences for Customary Routines and Activities, Section F
- Pain Assessment Interview, in Section J, Health Conditions
