Will ICD-10 updates occur annually each October 1 as they do for ICD-9?

You can expect ICD-10 updates to follow the same timeline that you are already accustomed to for ICD-9—almost.

An ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee Meeting was held September 15-16, 2010, when it was announced that during this transitional time, the updates for these code sets will follow this schedule:

  • 10/1/11: Last regular ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 updates
  • 10/1/12: Limited updates to both ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS
  • 10/1/13: Limited updates to ICD-10-CM/PCS (no ICD-9-CM updates)
  • 10/1/14: Regular updates to ICD-10-CM/PCS will resume

To learn more about this decision to partially freeze codes, JustCoding members can access an October 26, 2010 article, “Partial code freeze prompts concern about lingering problematic codes.”
