We spoke with Kirk Mathews, CEO, principal, and founder of Inpatient Management Inc., St. Louis, about why small community rural hospitals should consider J-1 visa candidates.
Although some hospitals might hesitate before readily accepting foreign-born J-1 candidates, hospitals shouldn’t dismiss the pool of potential candidates, especially in challenging recruiting times.
The most important thing is to find “someone that is a proactive communicator,” says Kirk.
“A well-trained American-born physician who speaks the language perfectly but is generally withdrawn and not a good communicator can make just as poor of a hospitalist as a physician who struggles with the English language.”
