Email This Post Print This Post

AltaMed Health Services in Los Angeles recently announced that law enforcement officials are investigating one of its former temporary employees and others affiliated with the organization for suspected identity theft.

AltaMed notified 2,995 individuals with records used for marketing purposes that the former employee accessed. The former employee accused of accessing the records was hired to assist AltaMed in responding to an increase in healthcare enrollments. This individual did not have access to patient medical or billing records, according to the announcement.

Law enforcement officials recovered a hard drive and other evidence that may contain AltaMed records that may have been misused by an identity theft ring. Officials informed AltaMed of their findings, at which time the healthcare organization launched its own internal investigation. The AltaMed investigation revealed that the former temporary employee may have inappropriately accessed electronic and paper records of individuals who attended a community event hosted by the healthcare organization in Orange and Los Angeles counties, according to the announcement. However, the records that were accessed contained a combination of one or more of the following:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Provider information
  • Insurance information
