Emily: I cannot access the poll, but, yes, I have also paid for work-related expenses such as certification, dues, books, office supplies and like Linda, a personal printer (I don't find that a central printer makes me more efficient - just more distracted what with all the jumping up and down).

I agree with Linda that we need to invest in our own futures. It would be nice, however, if our organizations also understood the importance of keeping our unique knowledge and skill set current.

Emily - I cannot access the poll, but yes, I have paid for work related expenses such as travel, conference registration, certification expenses, books, subscriptions and even a personal printer.

If we call ourselves professionals and want to be the best we can be in our profession, especially in the endless days of cost reduction in healthcare, we need to invest in our own knowledge, future and productivity whether or not our companies will provide it. We are only hurting ourselves and our careers if we refuse to pay for our self-development.

Hi Pat,

Above the red link to the Quibblo Web site at the very bottom of the post you should see a large, blue poll question where you can enter your answer. If you can’t see that, you probably need to update your flash player or another software program, or maybe your organization’s computer system blocks access to sites like Quibblo.

In any case, if you’d like you can email me your answer at eberry@hcpro.com and I will enter your answer for you and it will be included in the final data. I will post the final results in an upcoming issue of the Credentialing Resource Center Connection.

Best,
Emily
